Ground Source Heat Pumps

  • There are three types of ground loop: horizontal, vertical loops and pond loops
  • The ground source unit is usually located inside or in an outbuilding with flow and return pumps running from the heat pump to the house.
  • Loops are buried in the garden. If you have lots of land these can be horizontal loops extending over 500-100m lengths. If  you don’t have lots of land, these can be vertical loops, going up to 100m down
  • Heat pumps can be installed in all new build properties. They can also be ‘retrofitted’ in existing buildings, as long as the building is sufficiently well insulated.

How Does Ground Source Heating Work?

Ground-source heat pumps work by extracting heat from outside and transferring it either to the hot water or heating systems of the house, or both. Ground source heat pumps circulate fluid through pipes buried in the ground to extract the latent heat from the ground. In the UK the average temperature of the ground just below the surface is between 8°C and 13°C. This temperature remains fairly constant throughout the year. The heating water output from the heat pump is typically 45°C – 55°C.

We are experienced and fully qualified in both domestic and commercial installations of ground source heat pumps. We have a friendly team of installation engineers who are happy to discuss the benefits of installing your ground source heat pumps as part of your renewable energy system.
